The container shipping industry consists of shipping companies with as core activity the transportation of containerized goods over sea via regular liner services.
Containers transformed the economics of shipping: the ability to pack different goods into uniform boxes simplified loading and unloading, as well as transfers to rail, truck, and other modes of transport.
TEU – “twenty foot equivalent unit.” It is a standard container size that can be loaded and sealed onto ships, railroad cars, trucks, and planes. The dimensions of a TEU are 20 ft (length) × 8 ft (width) × 9 ft (height). The maximum gross mass for dry cargo TEU is 52,910 lb : 47,770 lb (net load) + 5,140 lb (empty container weight).
Most containers today are of the 40-ft (12.2 m) variety and are known as 40-foot containers. This is equivalent to 2 TEU. 45-foot (13.7 m) containers are also designated 2 TEU.
